NITROGEN

Nitrogen is more than
an inert gas. It's an
operational tool.

Most operations use nitrogen without fully leveraging it. Here’s why high-pressure nitrogen is critical across Africa’s key industries, and what happens when the supply isn’t right.

NITROGEN IS 78% OF THE AIR WE BREATHE - BUT INDUSTRIAL NITROGEN IS A DIFFERENT ANIMAL

Industrial high-purity nitrogen (99.5%–9.999%) is used precisely because it is inert - it won't react, won't combust, and won't contaminate. The purity level and pressure determine everything about how it performs in your process.

THE RISK OF UNDERSIZED OR IMPURE NITROGEN SUPPLY

Using compressed air instead of nitrogen for inerting or blanketing introduces oxygen - creating explosion risk in refineries and corrosion in pipelines. Using low-pressure nitrogen for pipeline testing results in inaccurate results and potential rework costs.

ON-SITE GENERATION VS CYLINDER SUPPLY: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOUR OPERATION?

Cylinder supply works for intermittent use. For continuous operations - refineries, large-scale food processing, mining - on-site nitrogen generation via a Denair PSA or membrane unit delivers lower long-term cost and eliminates supply chain risk.

WHEN YOUR CYLINDER PRESSURE ISN'T ENOUGH: NITROGEN BOOSTING

Standard cylinders deliver nitrogen at up to 200–300 bar. Many applications - pipeline testing, hyperbaric environments, high-pressure process systems - require 500–1,000 bar or more. A Maximator nitrogen booster bridges that gap without a new generation system.

GOING BEYOND

Service doesn't stop
at installation.

Nitrogen system downtime costs more than maintenance ever will. Our SLA contracts keep your system running – scheduled, prioritised and backed by genuine OEM parts.

SPRESS Service Level Agreements cover scheduled maintenance, priority emergency breakdown response and genuine Maximator, Denair and Mehrer parts on 3 to 5-year terms, all brands and models, across Africa.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a nitrogen generator and a nitrogen booster?

A nitrogen generator produces nitrogen on-site from compressed air using PSA or membrane technology. This is ideal for continuous, high-volume use. A nitrogen booster takes nitrogen already in a cylinder and increases its pressure to meet your process
requirement. Many operations use both: a generator for volume and a booster for high-pressure applications.

What purity of nitrogen do I need for oil & gas pipeline purging?

Pipeline inerting and purging typically requires 99.5%–99.9% purity. Higher purity (99.999%) is specified for instrumentation and metering equipment. We will confirm the correct purity grade for your specific application and regulatory environment.

Can you supply and service nitrogen systems outside South Africa?

Yes. SPRESS operates across 15+ African countries through a combination of our own field technicians and in-country distribution partners. Contact us with your location and we’ll confirm coverage and lead times.

How quickly can you respond to a nitrogen system breakdown?

SLA clients receive priority 24/7 breakdown response. For non-SLA clients, response times depend on location. We hold critical Maximator and Denair spares on-hand at our Centurion facility to minimise downtime.

Can SPRESS build a custom nitrogen system around my exact specification?

Yes. Our in-house engineering team designs and builds custom nitrogen skids, manifolds, transfer systems and pressure testing rigs. Tell us your pressure, volume and site constraints and we’ll scope a solution.

What industries do you serve with nitrogen solutions?

Oil & Gas (upstream, midstream, downstream), Mining, Food & Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Chemical Processing, Industrial & Manufacturing and Shipping & Offshore. If your operation uses nitrogen, we can supply and support it.
